Backyard Safety

Pool Safety

How safe is your pool barrier?

DROWNING IS ONE OF THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH FOR AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OF AGE. Backyard swimming pools are the most common location where child drowning incidents occur. Evidence suggests that a large number of these incidents are as a result of fencing that is faulty or non-compliant with Australian Standards.

Check the safety of your pool fence before your child does

In the last 12 months have you checked to ensure that….

Children are closely supervised by an adult at all times around the pool/spa? All gates and doors that lead into the pool area are self closing?
All gates and doors that lead into the pool area are self latching?
The pool gate is never propped open?
Your safety barrier is free of gaps, holes, or spaces that a child could try to get through?
The area surrounding your pool barrier is free of climbable objects (e.g. BBQs, tree stumps, chairs etc.)?

Pool Fence Safety

‘Closing the Gate on Backyard Pool Drowning’ Campaign

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian children under 5 years of age.

Statistics from the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report show that in 2015/16, 21 Australian children aged 0-4 years drowned.

Backyard swimming pools are the most common location where toddler drowning incidents occur. In 2015/16, over half of all toddler drowning incidents occurred in a backyard pool (52% – 11 incidents)

Evidence suggests that a large number of drowning deaths in pools are as a result of fencing that is faulty or non-compliant with Australian Standards.

Kidsafe Victoria has partnered with a number of stakeholders to encourage all pool owners to check the safety of their pool fences and surrounding areas before their child does.
